British military says bulk carrier near Qatar caught fire after being struck by projectile (independent.co.uk)

Community iconc/world@lemmy.world by
TheTimeKnife@lemmy.world

A bulk carrier caught fire on Sunday after being struck by an unknown projectile off the coast of Qatar, the British military has said. The UK Maritime Trade Operations Centre (UKMTO) reported a small fire on board the vessel, which was subsequently extinguished, with no casualties. The incident occurred 23 nautical miles (43 kilometres) northeast of Qatar’s capital, Doha. This attack marks the latest in a series of incidents targeting vessels in the Persian Gulf, following a fragile ceasefire between the United States and Iran. Just last Friday, the US struck two Iranian oil tankers, alleging they were attempting to breach its blockade of Iranian ports. In response, Iran’s Revolutionary Guard navy reiterated its warning on Sunday, stating that any assault on Iranian oil tankers or commercial vessels would be met with a “heavy assault” on US bases in the region or enemy ships.

Game Library for Friends and Family

Community iconc/selfhosted@lemmy.world by

Hello all! I have never selfhosted before, but I have a pretty extensive digital library of videogames (ROMs from a couple dozen retro systems among other executables) that my friends have expressed interested in having access. What’s the ideal software for giving them access to the library hosted on my drives? I’m picturing something like a selfhosted Steam where they see all of the games and can search via retro system, game tags, by name, etc. and each of could keep track of separate user accounts by playtime, favorites, recently played, etc. I use RetroArch and a few standalone emulators myself connected to RetroAchievements, so I figured they would need to download any emulators on their ends and then just pick and play the games as they see fit without having to have their own copies of the games.

Suspected boat explosion injures 11 in Miami (bbc.com)

Community iconc/news@lemmy.world by

US authorities are investigating the cause of a suspected explosion aboard a boat that injured 11 people in Miami, southern Florida. Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Battalion Chief Juan Arias told reporters that emergency crews responded to reports of a “possible boat explosion” at Haulover Sandbar, a popular tourist location. Eleven people were taken to local hospitals to be treated for burns and traumatic injuries, Arias said. Officials have not revealed the cause of the explosion. The BBC has approached Miami-Dade Fire and Rescue for further details. “We saw three people fly out of the boat,” eyewitness and local boat charter Patrick Lee told the BBC’s US partner CBS News. “I just saw a lot of them with burns all over them, and I said that it’s a hot fire,” Lee added. “It is quick, but it’s high octane gasoline, and so a lot of them got burnt and it was an explosion.”

Countries airlift nationals evacuated from from virus-hit cruise ship (bbc.com)

The first passengers evacuated from a hantavirus-stricken cruise ship docked near Spain’s Canary Islands have been flown home. Fourteen Spanish nationals on the chartered flight from Tenerife face mandatory quarantine at a military hospital in the capital, Madrid. They were followed by French nationals taken to Paris and Britons taken to Manchester. Staff involved in the operation in Tenerife pulled white hazmat suits over the evacuees’ clothes and hosed them down on the airport tarmac. Three people have died in the outbreak on the Dutch vessel MV Hondius, including two who were confirmed to have had hantavirus. Flights for Turkish, Irish and US citizens are also planned for Sunday, with other countries also preparing repatriation flights. Spain’s Health Minister Mónica García said the operation was “proceeding normally” and that all passengers aboard the MV Hondius were asymptomatic.

This appeared to be a response to accusations of nepotism, with the post previously held by al-Sharaa’s brother Maher.

AI is changing how we build and innovate. Nearly 60% of the code our engineers produce is now coauthored with AI—roughly twice the industry average, by our estimate. This isn’t just an efficiency story. It means our teams are shipping faster, iterating more quickly, and delivering more improvements to guests and hosts than we could before. We’re converting AI adoption into real product wins, and we’re just getting started.

A fresh wave of attacks by jihadist fighters in central Mali killed dozens of people, local and security sources said Saturday. Friday’s attacks were claimed by the al Qaeda-linked Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (JNIM), who had already killed at least 30 people in attacks on villages on Wednesday. One local official said the latest attacks by the armed groups had brought the toll to more than 70 in recent days. Another local official put the death toll at 80. “Our hearts are bleeding,” one local youth leader said, accusing nearby army detachments of doing nothing to help, despite multiple calls.

The Detroit International Riverfront is a redeveloped waterfront in the US city of Detroit, supported by public and private investment totaling several hundred million dollars. Key public spaces include the riverwalk, the Dequindre Cut Greenway and Trail, William G. Milliken State Park and Harbor, and a cruise ship terminal at Hart Plaza. The riverfront hosts major events including the Detroit Electronic Music Festival, the Detroit Jazz Festival, and the Detroit–Windsor International Freedom Festival. The last dates to 1959 and was originally a joint-venture with the nearby city of Windsor, Ontario. Since 2007, it has been split into separate events, but Detroit’s fireworks show retains Canadian elements such as dual national anthems and a flag flown by helicopter. The Detroit International Riverfront was voted the best riverwalk in the United States by readers of USA Today in 2021, 2022 and 2023.

It’s certainly a topic of interest to me, but I’d like to avoid the “spaceship pyramid” levels of conspiracy and the meatless text-to-speech summaries that will inevitably appear in my suggested feed(s). I thought I’d find it by now, given my feed has plenty of planes. I know it’s a distraction, but I may as well be entertained while I continue waiting for the yanks to release the real files we’re asking for.
